Kirstie Ennis to receive Pat Tillman Award for Service at 2019 ESPY Awards on ABC

BRISTOL, Conn. — A Marine Corps veteran who turned to outside sports activities and launched a nonprofit basis after dropping her leg in combat shall be honored with the Pat Tillman Award for Service on the 2019 ESPYS.

After surviving a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, Sgt. Kirstie Ennis underwent greater than a dozen surgical procedures addressing trauma to her brain, spine and shoulder. When docs determined to amputate her left leg above the knee, Ennis embraced outside actions as she recovered, strolling 1,000 miles throughout Britain for a charity occasion and incomes three gold medals in swimming on the Warrior Games. She’s at present working to summit all seven of the world’s highest peaks and stated she “does extra now on one leg than she ever even dreamed of doing on two.”

Ennis also launched the Kirstie Ennis Basis with the mission of “enhancing the quality of life of people and households” and providing “schooling, alternative, and healing in the outdoor.”

“After being medically retired from the Marine Corps resulting from my injuries sustained abroad, I’ve dedicated my life to serving others differently. To obtain the Pat Tillman Award and to be related to a real American hero is an incredible honor,” Ennis stated in a news release. “It has taken a village to get me so far in my life, and I might not be the place I am now with out the superb individuals surrounding me. To me, this can be a image of group and what it means to pay it ahead.”

ESPN created the Pat Tillman Award for Service in 2014 to honor a service-oriented individual with robust ties to the athletic group. Previous honorees embrace U.S. Navy Sgt. Jake Wooden; Purple Coronary heart recipient Israel Del Toro; U.S. Army Sgt. and Invictus Video games gold medalist Elizabeth Marks; former Notre Dame basketball player, Iraq warfare veteran and Purple Coronary heart recipient Danielle Inexperienced; and U.S. Paralympic gold medal sled hockey player and Purple Coronary heart recipient Josh Sweeney.

The 2019 ESPYS will air on ABC Wednesday, July 10, 2019, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
