Flash floods, slides in eastern Indonesia kill at least 50


A disaster official say days of torrential downpours have triggered flash floods and mudslides in mountainside villages in Indonesia’s easternmost province, killing at the very least 50 individuals and injuring 59 others.

National Catastrophe Mitigation Company spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho stated the disasters in Papua province’s Jayapura district submerged tons of of houses in neck-high water and dirt. Additionally they destroyed roads and bridges, hampering rescue efforts.

He stated 50 bodies had been pulled from the mud and wreckage of crumpled houses by Sunday, and one other 59 individuals have been hospitalized, many with broken bones.
